Reviews
Since 2008, SPACE has been in the runningas the best music venue Chicago, even if it’s just north of the Chicago border. You still haven’t made it out to SPACE? Well, this terrific book will give you a glimpse into what you’re missing. Photographer Harvey Tillis has lovingly documented a staggering array of performers doing their thing in SPACE’s warm, intimate setting. Dive into this beautiful book. You’ll be glad you did. Then make the trip Evanston to hear the next act playing at SPACE. It’s always a good night for music there…Frank Alkyer, Publisher, DownBeat.
The classic-style, black and white performance portraits by Harvey Tillis featured in his book 10 Years In Space capture exciting musicians in freely emotional moments — the kinds of intense and unself-conscious expressions that play across peoples’ faces when they have nothing to worry about and are deeply immersed in their art-of-the-moment. Most of the images Tillis offers are of bright players against dark backgrounds, and though the book is silent, we can hear their music thanks to his quick eye and sharp focus. Thanks, Harvey!…Howard Mandel, writer, editor, author, arts reporter for National Public Radio, consultant, and jazz journalist.
SPACE is a club designed by musicians for musicians, which is why musicians love to play there. It’s a warm listening room that makes you feel close to the artists—and Harvey Tillis pulls off that same trick with 10 Years In SPACE. He was there night after night over the club’s first decade as he photographed the performers drawn to this place’s vibe, intimacy, quality of sound and respect for the music…Mark Caro, journalist, entertainment critic, and author.
When SPACE opened in 2008, hard core music enthusiasts knew this was a special place just for them. Photographer Harvey Tillis knew this too and he made it his mission to capture the magic on stage over the decade with his keen lens. From living legends (Dr. John, Kermit Ruffins, Booker T. Jones, Richard Thompson) to recently departed icons (Alan Toussaint, Leon Russell, Johnny Winter, Magic Slim, Otis Clay, Hubert Sumlin, Pinetop Perkins) to young, rising stars who are now too famous to play there (Gary Clark, Jr., Alabama Shakes, Lumineers, Lake Street Dive) ace lens man Tillis caught them all. 10 years in SPACE is a visual testament to the power of music to touch our hearts and souls…Linda Cain, Founder/Managing Editor, Chicago Blues Guide.
I find myself enjoying this book on several levels… first the craft. Quality of the photography is amazingly good especially considering difficult conditions to work under…But it’s the images that grab and hold you. It’s people doing what they love. Joie de vivre is what I feel looking at the collection. So many different looking people, the full spectrum of humans sharing the love of making music. How often does a book of black and white photographs make you feel warm a fuzzy? I get that from this book and the more images I look at the more I feel that way. You would normally find a favorite or favorites in a book of photographs but I find myself enjoying this book by paging through the whole thing. ..It’s up to the artist to transcend the medium and I think Harvey has done that here because looking at the book makes me feel like I’m at the club and wish I was at the club…Roger Mattingly, Photographer, past Co-President ASMP Chicago/Midwest Chapter, Editor/Publisher of The Loupe.
